2018 A Year In Review: Part 2

2018 A year in Review

Part 2

The Year of Commitment

I am not a disciplined person. If you spent a minute to read Part One of this year’s review you’d see I barely scraped by with New year goals for 2018. It’s honestly never even been a goal of mine (to be more disciplined) but here I sit in 2019 and I really need it. Now the word discipline sounds awful to me, very restricting and suffocating so I’m going with Commitment. I’ve let creativity and honesty be my greatest characteristics for so long and while I love those parts about me, it’s starting to feel like I’m not super involved in my happiness. Because I don’t push myself to stay on track or finish a goal, I’m really just letting my days pass by. I want to be more committed this year to more than just my business and husband because i have the capacity for more. I want to fully commit 2019 to achieving personal goals, lifestyle changes and ambitions. I want to feel successful, this time next year and like some or even all of the intentions below were really invested in.

I want to be active and exercise everyday.

I want to eat better and learn more about what my body can handle and can’t.

I want to limit the amount of time I spend watching tv and comparing myself to others on the internet.

I want to be way more selfless to my partner ( like i want to be one of those wives everyone thinks loves their husband TOO much and does TOO much for his arrogant ass) Because that’s not at all me and probably wont ever be but I want to give it a try :P

I want to photograph more and more births, and meet more women who just understand that birth and art can truly be melded together and that it’s worth it to invest in your moments.

I want to meet more people and like more people unconditionally.

I want to learn how to love myself too and be proud of where I am.

I want to get back into my painting, drawing and journaling. That used to be my way of finding peace, calming anxiety and expressing my heart but now a days I just pour a glass of wine and watch the Office and hope the anxiety will go away.

I want to not sleep in so much (even though I love it) a successful person gets up early and I want a little more feeling of that success.

These aren’t really my “goals” per say because I really can’t take another year of feeling like I achieved no personal goals. But they are my ambitions for this coming year and I am speaking it into existence right now that I will be a more committed person. It doesn’t happen overnight and I’m trying to be more gracious about that but I’m also trying to look at the word committed and discipline not as a sentencing to a boring life but to a better and happier life because I’m putting more into it rather than letting it happen to me.

2018 was a happy year. I got to photograph so many stories that have shaped me for the better. My business grew from a little transplanted seedling to a full on garden that is still growing. I traveled and saw elephants, lions, leopards and all the other African animals so many may never see. I created a project I’m so proud of called The Motherhood Project that allowed me to get creative and learn so much more about womanhood and motherhood; thank you Lindsay for making this past year and project so amazing. So please do not misunderstand my goals for 2019, they are coming from a place of wanting to just be committed to the changes I want to see and opening myself to have the capacity to really experience more.

Thank you to all my people and I look forward to another year creating! If you’ve chosen a name for 2019 I would love to hear it so please leave it in the comments!

And of course this collection of images below are my favorites(atleast part two of my favorites), they are full of the raw and powerful quality I want my work to express. There is nudity and there is blood in some of my work, yes, but I think there is so much power and beauty in our bodies and I just couldn’t censor my favorites. All photos have been approved and released by the client for sharing.

2017: Part 2 A Year in Review

2017: Part 2 A Year in Review | The Year of Patience

Cheers to 2018! I know I'm almost a week behind but that's just how I roll. This series of review is so therapeutic for me and a little tradition I love to do for my business. So even when I'm a little behind (or more like a lot behind) I still want to get these posts up and out into the world for myself and those who follow along. This coming year will be called the year of Patience. I've realized over the last couple months my strong desire for goals to just happen now. I never honestly saw myself as an impatient person until I realized how often I was searching for quick fixes and short cuts to my hopes and goals. So this year I've really set my heart on being patient and steady. I've struggled often with the anxiety and doubt that my goals will never be met and that's why I find the word patience to be so healing. I keep telling Chris that I just need to be happy with each victory rather than counting them up and not finding enough.

All of that said I have a lot of hope and resolve for this coming year in both my business life and personal life. And I always find writing out my hopes as a way to make them real, they are no longer passing thoughts but goals that I really do aim to achieve. So here it goes, a few goals I'm hoping for but staying patient about for 2018 they are for both my personal life and business.

First would definitely be my health. I've been struggling with that for quite some time and I'm ready this year to truly be authentic and transparent about this huge part of my life that I struggle with. Gone are the days when I can really forget about whats going into my body, I'm hoping to get focused and be patient with myself as I change the way I see food and wine. With that being said, my second goal would be to see myself with ALOT more grace. So often in the photography world I hear women crying out for self acceptance. Taking self portraits of their flaws and calling it beautiful. I honestly tried this past year to put myself in front of the camera once a week thinking it would be this path to healing. But it was mostly painful and scary and vulnerable. Being in the worst shape of my life and trying to capture the way I saw myself always felt like a disaster. But for 2018 I want to truly love more of my flaws in a way that gives me power rather than weakness and insecurity. Still working on the practicality of this hope but a huge drive for me is to one day have a daughter and to be a reflection of body loving confidence to her. I want her to see herself with love and grace so I know my heart has got to be soften toward myself to be a better example one day. (no I am not presently pregnant, this is more for down the line)

Thirdly I want to photograph what I'm passionate about. I want to capture people who truly get the work I'm trying to do. I also want to meet more people in general. Moving to Durham has been more of a surprising joy than I could have imagined. And my business has in no way felt like it was stalling even though I moved it during the biggest photography season of the year. But their are parts that I'm still trying to grow; Parts that took time in Kansas City and will take time in Durham. These goals are where I need to find patience. I want to shoot double the births in 2018 and half the Weddings. I want to shoot more sessions in people's homes, capturing the true love and joy found when people feel comfortable to be themselves. I want to document more intimate stories of motherhood, not just birth, but the emotional ups and downs of growing a child inside of you and then outside of you.

So there you go three big goals for my 2018 I'm even terrified to write them down. What if they don't come true, now everyone will laugh at me... and thats when I have to say to myself "patience"

2016: Part 2 a Year in Review | The Year of Growth

Good Evening New Year,

Cheers to the first day of 2017. I am excited to call this Year the one of Growth and lean into whatever process 2017 has for me. This passed year was named Bravery and my intention with each obstacle was to face it head on with as little fear or anxiety as possible. Honestly I'm just ready to feel grounded in 2017 and grow whichever way I'm supposed to.

Hannahill Photography is growing too! I'll been updating the website, logo and moving into shooting Weddings all over the United States. One of my great passions has always been traveling so one of my great hopes for 2017 will be to travel for more weddings and open up more Family session days in multiple cities that are close to my heart.

I'm pumped because I'll be putting together 'My hopes and dreams Bucket List' that will give huge discounts to couples or families who want sessions in some of the dreamiest places around. I'm excited for all the big changes of 2017 personally and with Hannahill Photography and ready to see how much growth can happen in 1 year!
