The Motherhood Project: Part Three

The Year in the Life of Motherhood Project :

Part 3

32 Weeks - 37 Weeks

With every day we get closer and closer to meeting this little one. I go to sleep each night thinking, I may be called at 4:00am to rush to L's side and witness her miraculous birth story. I get a little too invested in all of my clients but this one is tugging at my heart. I want to witness the moment where L says, "it's a girl or boy" and calls this sweet growing baby it's name. I want to experience her strength and witness her Hypno baby ways.

I am also excited to move into this next part of the photo series where its all about the motherhood reality. Pregnancy is inspiring and life changing but pales in comparison to the lifetime of child rearing. I can't wait to document the bringing home of this baby, the sleeping and not sleeping, breast feeding and juggling a million things at once. Not for me but for L. to have this proof of her invincibility and tenderness when faced with 5 little ones.

Part three is of our last few sessions before their beautiful birth story (which I'll probably do as it's own part all together!) We got to celebrate L. and her sweet marriage, her relaxed moments of solitude waiting for this sweet baby and the chaos of being a very pregnant mom with 4 older boys in the heat of the summer.

32 Weeks

There is something rare and fierce about a couple experiencing a pregnancy together. It shapes you, challenges you and prepares you for together guiding and caring for this little one through life. To do this now 5 times is an incredibly beautiful thing to watch. L. and her husband reflect the joy and courage it takes to bring up 4 boys and still get so excited to talk about baby number 5. For me it was fundamental to the story to get to document their love and intimacy there in their own bedroom and space.

[ Also that gorgeous land we did the outdoor photos on is their neighbor's back yard. Which seriously has the most lush landscape I've ever seen! ]

37 Weeks

Summer is hot for all of us and North Carolina has not been spared the hellish temperatures. But I can't even imagine how it feels to also be really pregnant, have all 4 boys home from school for the Summer and be dealing with the heat. L. of course doesn't ever let it phase her and literally swims in the pool almost every day. When we met for coffee the first time back at the beginning of the year, this idea of her being 37-39 weeks pregnant and chasing her kids around the pool was a memory she never wanted to forget. I could not wait to capture this chaos and joy for their family. It was the perfect way to finish the first half of our series.

Mothers Day Special

Motherhood Sessions Special : In Celebration of Mothers Day

Growing up my mom was always the creative type, an artist and nurturer at heart. She always had a paint brush in hand, craft project in process or camera up ready to capture our life.

She valued documenting our everyday moments before it was even in style. We even have these videos from back in the 90s of when we were all little ones. She would wake us each up with the video camera and capture everything we did in those 24 hours, from potty training to preschool to putting us to bed at night. Her love for just making a record of our family history has been something that has stuck with me my entire life.

I remember though that while she captured life as art in a beautiful way, she struggled herself to get in front of the camera. She always wanted to be the person taking the photos of our family road trips, spaghetti covered faces and even the one to volunteer to snap the group photo at Disney world. She avoided being in the frame as much as possible.

She is in no way a rare case and I can admit I’ve gotten that gene too. Once I started to become a photographer it made it that much harder for me to force myself in front of it. It’s weird how walls come up and how safe it feels to be in control of capturing the moment rather than being present in it. I think as women we all have a bit of anxiety when it comes to being seen and photographed.

Especially as moms, the moments that you are spending with your littles and being present just don’t usually feel like your most glamorous. We can all agree parenthood isn’t perfect, and that mistakes and messes are made. But these seasons of childhood, raising your kiddos and documenting those in between moments have such an importance. Remembering the way you routinely woke your little ones up each morning, the way you took your kiddos to school with coffee in one hand and your youngest sleeping in the carseat, the sweet giggles that fill the house at bath time or the way your kiddos love to play outside until dark.

So for this Mother's Day instead of offering mini sessions or mommy and me sessions I thought I'd offer simply a few new types of Motherhood sessions with a limited time discount in honor of Mother's Day.

Titus L: Birth Story Revisited

Titus L. : Birth Story Revisited | 1 Year later

One year ago today this little one was brought into the world. Photographing births has always been a deep passion of mine; one that truly felt reignited by this little guy's birth. I remember walking out the hospital the morning he was born and literally jumping because I had finally been reunited with my passion. Watching Ellen fiercely work through her contractions, make hard choices, fight through the exhaustion while still maintaining this pure sense of peace and joy that she would soon meet her son was just the amount of empowerment I needed to see. Whatever fear she felt she continuously fought against it. I remember the room being filled with their birth playlist which was this incredible mixture of soft hymns and the most joyful gospel music you can think of. I remember how after sleeping in the hospital room all night we woke up to this gorgeous morning light. I remember looking up to see Jaremy just holding Ellen's hand, laughing and praying with her knowing that their little boy would be there soon. That morning light made each photo and moment that much more hopeful and captivating. It streamed through the room just as Titus was brought earth side and I remember thinking "my god, this job is everything."

You may be wondering, why is Hanna rewriting and sharing a blog post from one year ago when she is 15-30 blog posts behind. Well thats a great question. I realized that in one year my passion for birth photography has grown like a wildfire in my spirit. My style and desire to capture that authentic, raw emotion that is present in every sacred birthing space has only solidified. That spirit and style was just re-beginning when I wrote this story last year. I was just remembering a passion I held a little captive in my heart. Without even reason I found myself going back through this birth and finding new details and moments I had lost when I posted it before. I found myself reworking the color, light and composition and wanted to be able to share it again in celebration of both growth as a business and my passion for this work. This new blog for me is a reflection, reinvigoration of an already beautiful story just with a new perspective one year later. I obviously won't be able to reblog every birth each year as my style grows and changes but there really was something so special about this birth that made me feel pretty much just called to re share and retell it in a new way.

If you want to take a look at last years orignal post you can do so through this link.

You'll see that I've added a lot more moments never before shared. It's crazy how much can change in 1 year. Cheers to little Titus today on his first birthday!

The Hann Family

The Hann Family | Hanna Hill Photography

This Summer has been crazy for so many reasons and it's felt like maybe a week long at most.  We are presently in the middle of packing up all our things to move in two weeks and I'm doing my best staying on top of everything else in my life. Along with sessions and running my business full time I've added mentorship to my list. It's been an awesome summer of growing up other women in the art of photography. For some it was to help jump start their own small photography business and others just to teach them how to understand their camera more.

A part of that mentorship was setting up a real session or two just to get behind the camera and show how I like to run my sessions and walk through how to adjust your camera while in a real session. This session was captured with my great friend Lyn of her long time friends the Hann family. It was laid back, fun and centered around capturing the sweet connections of Mom, Dad and their little boy. I loved getting to meet this fun family and just wanted to share some of the shots captured during our mentorship session.

If you have any questions about photography mentorship I would love to talk, so feel free to email me  here or if you just want to get your family session in before the end of the Season I have a few more slots open and would love to meet your Family this Summer! Also stay tuned for Fall Mini Session dates because I will be back in both October and November to Check in with and photograph my awesome families.

Luca A. : Birth Story

I think it's pretty easy to look at birth and get sincerely fearful. You've grown up hearing from movies, television and your mom that its a crazy sweaty painful mess to be forgotten and while it's worth it in the end to have a little one, the build up is this terrifying unknown. I also grew up thinking that it was inevitable that since I was a pretty loud and talkative person that it meant I would also fly off the handle with anger and obscenities during birth. Because as I understood it, handling pain is almost impossible so you'll need to cuss and scratch the eyes out of every human around you. I was pretty sure I would not have any control over what happened. And that in and of itself is the worst assumption many people make about their birth; that they will have no control of what happens.

The birth of Luca was a beautiful example of a mother who chose joy during her labor. She chose to rely on her husband rather than use him to unleash any fear or pain. She needed him and he helped sustain them both through each contraction. There were moments where fear or worry flooded the room but their bond was the force that allowed peace back in. It was incredible to see. Her strength came out in her moments of laughter mixed in with her intensity to bring this little boy into the world. Whether she felt in control of these emotional responses I don't know but I can attest that she flawlessly was an example of grace and strength all through her birth.

Birth is so much more  beautiful than culture gives it credit. It is indeed a sweaty painful mess sometimes but gosh, it also has a way of making time stand still. When Luca finally arrived the room felt like we were on pause and then we finally pressed play. There was so much joy completely unleashed into the room. And I've never experienced a sweeter moment then when Luca's big sister finally came in to meet him. She was welcoming him into the world singing "happy birthday" in the cutest voice and pointing at baby like her life was finally made.

These incredible unique pieces of each birth story are why I love being a birth photographer. Each mother is different and strong in their own fierce way and every support team plays a role of care and steadiness from the nurses to the husband to the mother of the mother. It makes me cry almost every time.

If you've ever thought about Birth photography or wondered if it might fit your ideal birth atmosphere I'd love to talk. It's a passion of mine to make birth photography a more normal and a more culturally understandable concept. I love being able to show the world the unique and beautiful ways each little life is brought into the world. Birth can be more than hospital gowns, pain and one cell phone photo, you can capture the incredible powerful images that tell the story of new life.
