Carlita and DeMarion’s Maternity Story at Falls Lake

Hanna Hill Photography | Raleigh-Durham Birth and Family Photography

Celebrating the body and beauty in motherhood is one of my favorite things. It’s peaceful, expectant and empowering. To shine a little light on the uniqueness of the pregnant body because it really is so temporary. Your body will not even look the same with the next child, pregnancy is such a powerful way to teach you how to be present and live in the changing moment.

I was honored to get to capture this hilarious and truly connected couple earlier last Summer. Their love, support and strength together was inspiring and translated with perfect ease into their birth space (which I also got to capture and will be sharing that story soon) DeMarion is a joker and so in love with his wife that taking photos of their emotions and excitement was one of my easiest jobs from 2018 :P And Carlita well you can see how stunning and well fitted to her beautiful pregnant body she was. She had a grace and power that just shown through each frame.

They were both open to adventure and wanted to capture the beauty of the bare bump (my favorite thing in all maternity sessions.) We all were battling the water early one Sunday morning (me with my full camera gear, being a risk taker for no reason, waist deep in the water, shorts completely soaked :P) I just wanted us all to feel the water and get a little carried away with the natural setting.

They told me later after I chose this spot, that they had come here countless times before they were married, for dates and long talks. It brought even more significance to the natural beauty of Falls Lake, to know that they had a history here and were making more memories by celebrating their growing little girl here too.

The Birth of Eve

The Birth of Eve &

The Motherhood Journey of Chiara

An Empowered Homebirth at Windy Hill Farm

Birth does not fit into a box.

Birth is powerful in it’s unpredictability.

Birth can be long.

Birth is beautiful.

And Birth has a plan of it’s own sometimes even when we really wish it didn’t.

The Birth of Eve The Motherhood Journey of Chiara | Farm house homebirth | Hanna Hill Photography | Raleigh Durham Birth Photographer
The Birth of Eve and Motherhood Journey of Chiara | Farm house homebirth | Raleigh Durham Birth Photography and Videography

In the wee hours of the night I got the call that Chiara was in labor. Things were progressing gradually and her incredible doula/sister had a feeling baby would be there soon. When I arrived at the farm I was overcome by the beautiful setting. The sun still hadn’t risen but you could hear the early morning birds and feel the cold morning chill. When I entered the farm house I was hit with the incredible smell of homemade soap, wall of family photos and only the faint sounds of Chiara progressing beautifully through labor.

The room was in almost complete darkness as Russell and Chiara held one another and Johanna (sister/doula of Loving Hands Doula Care) constantly sat by their side. Along with the 4 of us we had present Chiara’s mom (also a practicing hospital midwife) and Deb Fiore and her team from Carrboro Midwiffery. Basically it was a house full of birth loving strong women, Russell who was literally one of the most supportive husbands around and curious cats! The birth sisterhood energy in the room though was palpable!

Soon after I arrived Chiara decided it was time to get into the pool. She worked gracefully and intensely for several hours as the sunlight spilled into the space. Contractions started to slow down though so she was encouraged to get up and move around a little. Chiara had talked about how much she wanted to labor outside and have photos outside. I was so excited when the weather was warm enough and perfect for her to take multiple strolls all over the property.

When baby was still not descending in the late afternoon it was time for rest, get off her feet and try and let her body relax for the hard pushing to come. She had been trying so many different positions and movements over the last 20 hours that her body needed to just restore. All of her support women and me just sat about quietly and shared stories on the porch swing and waited.

It felt like a very long day and I know Chiara was feeling discouraged and exhausted. She was doing absolutely everything she possibly could with strength and peace but that baby was just in the wrong position (though we didn’t fully know it at the time) There are some births that just weigh heavily on your heart. Chiara’s journey was definitely one of them. Because after more than 40 hours of labor (I was present for about 30) it was decided baby’s position was longer head down. Mom had to make the very hard decision to go to the hospital to get checked, knowing that most likely she would be sent for an emergency Caesarean upon arrival. After all this planning and hope for a beautiful farm homebirth I think everyone felt that loss for Chiara. Thankfully everyone was healthy and little Eve was born in the early hours of the next morning.

I was personally unable to be in the OR for this little one’s birth, it felt emotional for me that we had come this far and I was having to go home. But at the same time I knew Chiara and Russel needed to process this for themselves, surrounded by the support of their amazing doula and family.

I was able to revisit them together on the farm a few weeks later. I wanted to capture a moment for them reminiscent of their birth story. So we did a little recreation of the “baby being placed on your chest” moment. I got to meet baby Eve, see her little curls and celebrate this new life with her and her beautiful strong parents.

I will always keep a special place in my heart for this story, some of my favorite images I’ve ever taken are from this birth but mostly because that day is one I’ll never forget. There was something about the beauty in her power the sisterhood peacefulness and the shared emotion of waiting that keeps me coming back. I just love that in birth, I know I will always learn something from the experience. I’m constantly growing and receiving the knowledge of the women and mothers who have gone before us, who have poured out their wisdom so that we can know the beauty and power in the way they bring life into the world.

The Birth of Eve Film Story

After choosing a Caesarean and being taken to the hospital through ambulance. because of the emergent nature of the situation, I was unable to be in the OR and we decided that I would give Chiara and Russel time to process and heal.

They brought a healthy and happy baby girl named eve in the wee hours of the night.

I got to catch up with them a few weeks later at there cabin (also on the farm property) where the have been making a sweet home together.

2018 A Year In Review: Part 2

2018 A year in Review

Part 2

The Year of Commitment

I am not a disciplined person. If you spent a minute to read Part One of this year’s review you’d see I barely scraped by with New year goals for 2018. It’s honestly never even been a goal of mine (to be more disciplined) but here I sit in 2019 and I really need it. Now the word discipline sounds awful to me, very restricting and suffocating so I’m going with Commitment. I’ve let creativity and honesty be my greatest characteristics for so long and while I love those parts about me, it’s starting to feel like I’m not super involved in my happiness. Because I don’t push myself to stay on track or finish a goal, I’m really just letting my days pass by. I want to be more committed this year to more than just my business and husband because i have the capacity for more. I want to fully commit 2019 to achieving personal goals, lifestyle changes and ambitions. I want to feel successful, this time next year and like some or even all of the intentions below were really invested in.

I want to be active and exercise everyday.

I want to eat better and learn more about what my body can handle and can’t.

I want to limit the amount of time I spend watching tv and comparing myself to others on the internet.

I want to be way more selfless to my partner ( like i want to be one of those wives everyone thinks loves their husband TOO much and does TOO much for his arrogant ass) Because that’s not at all me and probably wont ever be but I want to give it a try :P

I want to photograph more and more births, and meet more women who just understand that birth and art can truly be melded together and that it’s worth it to invest in your moments.

I want to meet more people and like more people unconditionally.

I want to learn how to love myself too and be proud of where I am.

I want to get back into my painting, drawing and journaling. That used to be my way of finding peace, calming anxiety and expressing my heart but now a days I just pour a glass of wine and watch the Office and hope the anxiety will go away.

I want to not sleep in so much (even though I love it) a successful person gets up early and I want a little more feeling of that success.

These aren’t really my “goals” per say because I really can’t take another year of feeling like I achieved no personal goals. But they are my ambitions for this coming year and I am speaking it into existence right now that I will be a more committed person. It doesn’t happen overnight and I’m trying to be more gracious about that but I’m also trying to look at the word committed and discipline not as a sentencing to a boring life but to a better and happier life because I’m putting more into it rather than letting it happen to me.

2018 was a happy year. I got to photograph so many stories that have shaped me for the better. My business grew from a little transplanted seedling to a full on garden that is still growing. I traveled and saw elephants, lions, leopards and all the other African animals so many may never see. I created a project I’m so proud of called The Motherhood Project that allowed me to get creative and learn so much more about womanhood and motherhood; thank you Lindsay for making this past year and project so amazing. So please do not misunderstand my goals for 2019, they are coming from a place of wanting to just be committed to the changes I want to see and opening myself to have the capacity to really experience more.

Thank you to all my people and I look forward to another year creating! If you’ve chosen a name for 2019 I would love to hear it so please leave it in the comments!

And of course this collection of images below are my favorites(atleast part two of my favorites), they are full of the raw and powerful quality I want my work to express. There is nudity and there is blood in some of my work, yes, but I think there is so much power and beauty in our bodies and I just couldn’t censor my favorites. All photos have been approved and released by the client for sharing.

Milly L. Fresh 48

A Rainy Day First Meeting at Home

| Milly L. Fresh 48 Story

A huge part of a birth story is the moments after. The moments of coming home and meeting the loved ones that will forever surround you. This story seriously melts my heart every time I look through these photos. The moments this little brand new baby girl met her big brother. It was everything you want in a first meeting.

Amber and Chad were awesome, they got home from the hospital a day or so after bringing this little one into the world. They took the time to wash up relax and introduce little Milly to her new surroundings. And they planned to have little Elias come meet his little sister the following day and have me there to photograph the genuine and real reactions and love that was poured out. Now toddlers are often the hardest kids to react the way you may want. I always encourage parents to have pretty low expectations when it comes to first meetings and fresh 48s because thats just a whole lot of change for little mind. But since Amber and Chad are incredible documentary photographers, they knew exactly what they were getting. They wanted to full joy, crazy antics, tantrums and true life that now being a family of 4 would bring.

The moment Elias got home he ran straight to his mom, snuggled in on her and asked for a snack. There was no notice of little Milly sitting in the center of the room, he was right in his mode and it was so sweet to see. After getting his chicken nuggets (a must) Chad prompted him a bit to go explore the living room. Those reactions were seriously priceless. He was curious, joyful and a little shocked. When Amber went to feed little Milly, Elias was so focused on her not eating mommy and insisted she eat some of his nuggets. It was seriously the cutest thing, him shoving chicken nuggets towards them, even laying them in her little basinet as a tempting lure away from his mom.

I think it was important to let Elias do his thing. Find some joy and get back to his energetic self. So we all followed him into his room where we watched him find wonder and normalcy amongst his balloons. The beauty of this moment was watching Chad and Amber in their pure patience. There was no "right" way for Elias to react except the way he did.

As our session continued there was a serious storm rolling in, clouding up all the windows. in order to get enough light I suggested we take some photos outside while the rain still wasn't coming down. It was peaceful to see the clouds roll in and daddy cuddling his brand new baby. It was also adorable when their sweet neighbor came by to drop of treats and meet their new little girl. We were out there maybe 10 minutes before the wind picked up and swept us back inside but those moments of joy and family sitting on their porch were truly some of my favorites.

I love this session because it really takes you through the story. The first meeting to the processing little brain of a new big brother. In so many ways Home fresh 48s may be the way to go. Especially when you have older siblings, those moments of first meeting can be all over the place but what better place to do them, than in the comfort of their own surroundings. Letting those new big brothers and sisters work through the change and joy they feel all while surrounded by the normal home they know.

If you want to see the first part of this story (little MIlly's birth) go check out the story HERE it also includes a short film with clips from this Fresh 48 session!

Milly L. Birth Story

A Beautifully Fast Natural Hospital Birth in

Cary, NC

| Milly L. Birth Story

With almost every birth, mom goes through a series of plans and hopes that she wants to include in her experience. Answering questions of where to birth, how to birth, who will be present etc. But the crazy yet beautiful part of birth is how unpredictable is can be. One moment you're filling up a tub for a home birth and the next you are sitting in a hospital bed. As much as we love to plan it out and wish our plans into reality, sometimes birth, babies and bodies have a mind of their own.

The day I met Amber and Chad was pretty crazy. They had randomly called me a few days before and were due in under 5 days. They were in a bit of a panic/rush to find a new birth photographer since other options had fallen through. Amber's previous birth had been early and fast so they really had no time to wait, they just wanted to meet and get something confirmed. I came over to their home office the very next day and they confirmed on the spot.

Days went by, every morning I would wake up thinking I was missing it but Amber would text me to say all was good and still no notable contractions. So i went on with my days, did some family sessions and made sure those families knew I may have to rush off at any moment. But still Amber's due date came and went and we waited and texted almost everyday. Our local Baby Co. birth center went on a diversion earlier this year. Amber had been hoping to deliver there after having to deliver at a hospital with her first. So with each text we also hoped and prayed that Baby co. would lift their diversion just in time to let Amber birth at their center.

One evening our friends asked us out to a local Blues club. Chris and I love going out with friends but rarely find the time during the week days. But this Wednesday we were down and Chris had just finished his semester so we wanted to celebrate. Of course that was going to be the night of this little one's arrival. The moment we walked into our home after dancing with our friends and enjoying live music, I got the text from Amber that they were heading to the birth center. My mode immediately changed and I was in birth photog zone. I got changed and packed and wondered if I should wait for a follow up text. (Often I like to wait till mom gets some sort of check or conversation with their care provider since I like to be there only once active labor starts)  But I included the phrase, "but let me know if things start to progress quickly on the car ride" I am so glad i said that because within about 10 minutes Amber responded with basically, "this baby is coming" I got in the car immediately.

I met them and their sweet midwife from Baby Co. in the Lobby of Wake Med Cary. (unfortunately the diversion had not been lifted at this point, but the incredible midwives of Baby Co. were still committed to caring for Amber while delivering at the hospital) I was waiting for a few minutes before they all walked in, Amber in obvious active labor and trying to move as quickly through paperwork as humanly possible.

We all rushed into the room. Chad was completely devoted, sacrificial and loving throughout every contraction. He whispered words of truth and strength to her when she needed it.

My favorite moment was when amber said, "I can't do this." and He gently replied, "you already are."

They worked together like a team and thats one of the most beautiful things to see in a birth space.

Amber was fierce and so sweet I could not handle it. She would breath through an exceptionally hard contraction and then in the short moments between smile and laugh at the random joke given by the nurse. She had such a sense of purpose and joy as she labored her daughter into the world. She was determined, the move fearlessly through her contractions and to let her body release the tension as much as possible.

That baby was in Amber's arms within 1 hour of checking into the hospital. Her contractions moved from ready to more ready to pushing all within 40 minutes of each other and she brought little Milly earth side so smoothly and gracefully! The incredible support from their midwife at Wake med Cary and their midwife from Baby co. truly blew me away. Amber was able to labor fully natural and pretty hands off. I know Amber had hoped for a birth center birth but in the end the care that surrounded her was truly perfect. She was able to feel safe with her choices which in my experience should always be an important goal for birth.

Sweet Milly was born Happy, healthy and snuggly. Amber and Chad had waited to find out the gender and when little Milly was lifted up, there was just a sweet resounding cry of, "it's Milly." Amber's reaction of joy was one of my favorites of all time, pure laughter and joy that now she had a little girl.

The day we had all first met I remember them telling me that while dating they had talked about names they would want for their children. They agreed on two names, 1 boy and one girl. Elias and Milly, and now they have both. That thought kept ringing in my head as I was photographing that first hour of all three of them together.

There story was riddled with the unpredictable beauty of birth. But Amber and Chad stayed strong and flexible in the face of changes. I was able to do my very first fusion birth video for them. I'll link it first for those who want to take a look at their story or if you want a reason to cry :P Stay tuned as well for their Fresh 48 session where little Milly meets her older brother Elias for the first time. Gosh I love this family's story so much!
