The Motherhood Project: Part Four

A Year in the Life of Motherhood Project:

Part 4

The Birth Story of Hayes

Well if you are just jumping in then I suggest you first go check out Part One, Part Two and Part Three because watching this Motherhood journey from the beginning is SO beautiful and so worth it. In 2018 I got the opportunity to follow along on the journey of one incredible mother of 5! I watched as she grew a tiny human, loved her 4 older boys and husband unconditionally and stayed powerful and stunning in her womanhood. L’s story has been one of the things so many people have reached out to me about and so many people last year followed along to see. I’m so sorry for my lateness in sharing the next installment of their story and debatably the most epic. Today I’m excited to finally share the birth story of their fifth baby! In all its raw beauty and power!

After 4 births with all different arrival dates Lindsay was pretty shocked when this little one decided to keep us all waiting almost a week past his due date. That’s pretty typical for moms but when you’ve had a few early and few a on time I know we were all shocked when this little one was pushing us to 41 weeks.

I got the text/call late one Thursday night that L. was barely feeling contractions. Now this still meant a lot for me because with a fifth baby literally any sign could mean we are close to this little one slipping out :P I got myself ready, dressed and out the door by the time they texted 15 minutes later to say they were heading to the Women’s Birth and Wellness Birth Center.

When I arrived i was actually there right before they made it and we all walked in together. With them was L., Her husband, 4 boys, both grandmas, a great grandma and one grandpa. It was a party to say the least :P Most family sat in the waiting room getting the boys situated with places to sleep or just wait while L. went straight into the birth space.

L. is a Hypnobabies coach and total goddess when it comes to meditating through her birth. She was already in a state of hypnosis when she arrived with her headphones in. With every wave she breathed in and out like she knew exactly when and where this baby was coming down the birthing canal. She was so connected with baby and so in tune with her needs throughout. She knew when she needed a cold cloth, a hand hold and for everyone to just give her space. She described this part in her own words this way,

“Even though my eyes were closed during most of transformation I just felt so loved and supported by my birthing team.

My doula was reminding me to use my cues and telling me how amazing I was.

My nurse was helping to keep the ice water as stocked as possible.

My midwife was sitting on the floor just watching the birth unfold and telling me that I was doing a great job.

My husband never left my side and was holding the cold rags on my forehead.

During this time I was focused very inward so I could remain in my hypnosis and stay very comfortable…

I would think to myself how amazing this must be for everyone to watch.

I was totally rocking my birth and I knew it! I had never experienced having a birth photographer before and I was so excited for these moments to be captured so I could get to see what everybody else was getting to watch. With my eyes mostly closed and me focused on my hypnosis it wasn’t something I could get a sense of in my prior births.”

I may be remembering this wrong but I swear we were not in the birth suite longer than 20 minutes, I was still deciding whether i was going to turn some more lights on or pop out my flash, before L., sitting on the birthing stool, reached down and lifted her fifth baby boy up into her arms. I was standing right in front of her trying to grab each detail and moment in almost the complete dark. I looked down and saw babies head and knew it was time and seconds later L. had already gasped out her “i just birthed my fifth baby” breath. In all the commotion grandma or doula ran to yell for the whole family to come in (they had all planned to be there to witness the moment of birth) but since baby came out so fast they were all rushing in when baby was being lifted up. Here is how L. described this epic moment,

I brought the baby up to my chest and just stared in amazement at this new little life. My oldest son was first into the room and he saw me bringing the baby up to my chest.

The rest of our children and family came in right behind him. I remember saying, “My precious baby! You are finally here!”

My husband gave me a hug and a kiss, and we took a few moments to take it all in before looking down to discover we had another son!

What a blessing! What a miracle! We were just overjoyed!

L. and her husband wanted to be the first to announce the gender and if you watch the video, I’ll post at the end of this series, you can watch their live reaction. Oh so much love, shock and joy filled the room when they said, “it’s a boy” All the brothers gathered around like they had gotten their wish, filled with so much laughter and begging to hold him. It was a pretty amazing to witness.

L. just sat taking it all in, absorbing all the energy surrounding her, the oxytocin clouding the space and smiling at her strength to bring another little one into the world. They named him Hayes something they had taunted us all with saying, “girl or boy the name starts with H” So we had all come up with a million ideas but perfect little Hayes was it. As he snuggled close each boy got a chance to hold him and shower him with love. The room filling with excitement was truly infectious to us all.

I was so honored to first of all make it to this birth but to get to tell this incredible story of what it looks like to birth her fifth little boy amongst her family tribe and to feel so much power in your body that you literally reach down and bring your own little boy up into your arms. L. is a badass goddess and her birth story was one of my favorites to tell!

Titus L: Birth Story Revisited

Titus L. : Birth Story Revisited | 1 Year later

One year ago today this little one was brought into the world. Photographing births has always been a deep passion of mine; one that truly felt reignited by this little guy's birth. I remember walking out the hospital the morning he was born and literally jumping because I had finally been reunited with my passion. Watching Ellen fiercely work through her contractions, make hard choices, fight through the exhaustion while still maintaining this pure sense of peace and joy that she would soon meet her son was just the amount of empowerment I needed to see. Whatever fear she felt she continuously fought against it. I remember the room being filled with their birth playlist which was this incredible mixture of soft hymns and the most joyful gospel music you can think of. I remember how after sleeping in the hospital room all night we woke up to this gorgeous morning light. I remember looking up to see Jaremy just holding Ellen's hand, laughing and praying with her knowing that their little boy would be there soon. That morning light made each photo and moment that much more hopeful and captivating. It streamed through the room just as Titus was brought earth side and I remember thinking "my god, this job is everything."

You may be wondering, why is Hanna rewriting and sharing a blog post from one year ago when she is 15-30 blog posts behind. Well thats a great question. I realized that in one year my passion for birth photography has grown like a wildfire in my spirit. My style and desire to capture that authentic, raw emotion that is present in every sacred birthing space has only solidified. That spirit and style was just re-beginning when I wrote this story last year. I was just remembering a passion I held a little captive in my heart. Without even reason I found myself going back through this birth and finding new details and moments I had lost when I posted it before. I found myself reworking the color, light and composition and wanted to be able to share it again in celebration of both growth as a business and my passion for this work. This new blog for me is a reflection, reinvigoration of an already beautiful story just with a new perspective one year later. I obviously won't be able to reblog every birth each year as my style grows and changes but there really was something so special about this birth that made me feel pretty much just called to re share and retell it in a new way.

If you want to take a look at last years orignal post you can do so through this link.

You'll see that I've added a lot more moments never before shared. It's crazy how much can change in 1 year. Cheers to little Titus today on his first birthday!

Ethan J: Newborn

Ethan J.: Lifestyle Newborn Session

The joy on this little baby's face says it all. I can't get over the love and comfort I felt when I walked into the Jones home. Those first couple weeks after baby is welcomed home are exhausting, hard and new but being able to capture their love for little Ethan was totally worth it. I love lifestyle newborn sessions because they really are all about capturing mom, dad and baby in their element during some of the most vulnerable and joyful weeks of their life. You don't want to miss a single giggle from baby and you live so presently to all of their needs. I love how photography can be there to celebrate the present. To help you take a breath and see the beautiful parts of the life you're living. Even when it's exhausting and new there is so much to cherish.

If you are looking to capture these precious first weeks after your little one arrives with laid back celebration feel free to reach out! I'd love to capture your story!

The Hill Family

Raleigh Birth & Family Photography | Hanna Hill Photography

The Hill Family

I got to get my brother and his little family in front of my lens last weekend. It's been such a joy moving to North Carolina and being closer to this part of my family. My new little nephew is the sweetest, chubbiest baby angel. He is easy going and smiley, the perfect attributes for any family session. We explored Duke gardens together for the morning and just relaxed as a family capturing the beauty and colors of the garden changing from Summer to Fall.

I really would not have it any other way than to start of this Family Session season with the people I love. So excited for this October and November and all the beautiful families I'll be capturing! Cheers to Fall, the colors, the family time and praying for cooler weather!

Santiago : Birth Story

Santiago : A Family Centered Home Birth

Hanna Hill Photography | Raleigh Birth and Family Photographer

Santiago's birth was one of fierce strength and the epitome of what a family centered birth can really be like. Home birth is such a sacred and incredible way to bring your child into the world. There is just a sense of peace and comfort by being in your own space surrounded by the people you love and the atmosphere you've made home. It's hard to put into words really. Behind every birth there is a lot of fear, anticipation and worry about all the things that may or may not go wrong. It's why most women choose a hospital to bring their little one into the world. In so many ways that makes sense and I love those hospital birth just as much. But home births are in and of them selves accepting that birth is empowering and that you were actually built to handle a birth. That sense of strength and vitality always puts a completely different vibe into the air. A vibe of "you can do it" "you are strong" and "this is a true celebration."

The morning Santiago came into the world I woke to a text at around 5:00am. I was actually on call as backup for his arrival not the main photographer. In the world of birth photography having a back up is absolutely essential. As much as all of us want to be 24/7 available to out clients, life also happens and births are so unpredictable. I love that in the birthing community there really is a sense of friendship and community because just having someone else that you trust who's art is also beautiful and qualified brings you a sense of peace rather than competition.

So back to the story I woke up to a text from the main photographer Anna, of Anna Pollit.com, saying mom was in labor and that baby was coming today. Santiago's momma was on her 3rd baby so I knew that meant probably a swift labor but honestly had no idea how quick this little guy would arrive. I woke up showered and waited from a text from the mom to hear how far along things were coming. By the time I was done and dressed she had texted and was seriously ready for me to head that way. When I arrived I was met with the smell of home cooked soup, two sleepy brothers who had just woken up to all the commotion and a momma fiercely laboring.

She was a true warrior, one minute she was laughing and joking with her two year old son and the second she was peacefully yet intensely working through her contractions. The two big brothers were seriously making us all laugh, they were so incredibly excited to witness and meet their new little brother. The oldest just kept saying, "I'm so excited to meet him." and would run in every once and while to check if his little brother was on his way or not. The family focused vibe was so incredible and beautiful. This momma wanted those she loved to surround her and Santiago with as much relaxed and positive energy as possible.

I was seriously only there about 2 hours before this little boy was ready to come and see his family. This momma maybe pushed 3 times and he was out and crying, ready to meet his new family. The emotions in the room were uncontrollable, so many tears and laughs filled those first moments. Their oldest son just was over the moon that he now had another little brother to love on and their second son was so curious about how his life had just changed before his eyes.

I got to stay and watch this family of 4 become 5 and it was an incredible sight to see.I got to capture all of those incredible firsts that happen right after he comes into the world from his first feeding to getting his measurements done.
