Bergen, Norway

Bergen Norway | Hanna Hill Photography Travel Journal

Day 1:

Today I share the story of Chris and I's travels to the western coast of Norway. Truly the most spectacular place we've seen. It even rained every day we were there and we still can not get this beautiful city out of our minds. Our close friends who actually traveled with us in Scandanavia for the first half just shared some big news with us this past weekend. It reminded me how I wanted and needed to get this story up on the blog and of course how much I missed them both terribly.

Bergen is one of those rare places where the architecture and charm is as equally beautiful as the natural glory all around it it. From colorful houses along the coast to fjords that will blow your mind. We started our journey in Oslo and after a few days we trained to Bergen on the western coast. We arrived pretty late in the evening on a Sunday if I remember and after walking from the train station to our house, meeting our airbnb host and settling in, it was too late to eat anywhere(things close down pretty early on Sundays in Europe) So we found this hotdog stand. But this was no ordinary hotdog stand, they served things like Reindeer bratwurst and with fried onions and mayo on top. Weirdly enough I still to this day can't stop thinking about them, maybe it was the starving from all the travel and bickering about trying to find a place to eat before the city all shut down that night or they were that good. I'll never know :)

Day 2:

We woke the next morning and walked a little ways down the path to this adorable coffee shop. I insist on all my travels to start each day with a cup of coffee at a local shop. Not because I'm cool but because I can be kind of a brat without coffee :P We also ate strüdle that was handmade each day by the barista(only in europe).

We then went to the boat dock and tried to buy tickets to see the fjords. It was raining and cold and nothing was open that early. So Charlie our friend literally just went up to the first boat captain he saw and asked. Turns out it was the captain who did all the tours and he knew everything about them and how we could grab tickets (though most needed to be reserved far in advance) We were incredibly lucky because those fjords may have changed all four of our lives!

So Fjords! I'd love to put into words why these things were so life changing but even with the craziest of cold wind and rainy day we all were just moved by the clear majesty. I loved the little colorful houses sprawled all among the gaps in the fjords with no signs of roads to connect them to the rest of the world. We all took turns enduring the forceable winds at the front of the boat like total tourists, but I have no shame.

The little street we stayed on was something out of a European travel book. The cobble stone streets and bikes literally parked everywhere. I have this obsession with choosing our airbnbs according to pictures :P probably because I'm a photographer but seriously high ratings are great but if you can make me feel like I'm living the culture by staying in your airbnb then I'm officially sold.

I'm pretty sure after the Fjord we went back to our house and watched Chef's Table. Yeah sometimes we are not cool and not cultured because we prefer Netflix than walking around :P but by the afternoon we were ready to get out and see more. Out host had told us about the gorgeous views from Mt. Flöyen so we thought (on a cloudy, overcast day) lets hike that mountain to see the view :p

I don't want to say i regret that hike because honestly the first part was super cool. It felt like we found a land of moss and trees straight out of a Lord of the Rings movie. But probably halfway up the mountain it started to rain, we probably should have turned back. I mean logically there was no way things would clear up enough for us to see any view while it was raining. But we kept going :P

It was crazy, it was cold and we were all drenched. there is only so much water proof winter jackets can handle. When we got to the top there was this little shack, that memory of us all sheltering from the rain under this odd little shack at the top of the mountain is very funny to me. That rain did not let up until we were back down from the mountain. We definitely all argued about that hike for all of our own reasons but it's our favorite story to tell now.

I remember coming back from that hike and thinking i'm not sure I've ever felt this drenched and never needed a glass of wine so much. I let my camera rest a bit when we went out for drinks and dinner and a little souvenir shopping. Chris and I are not much for souvenirs, it always just adds to our packs and gathers dust. But we do try to grab one little momento from each adventure.

After being filled with wine and seafood i think we were all calm enough to attempt the Mt Flöyen again. Not hiking this time, we just took the little tram up. Of course by that time it was incredibly clear, no rain and the city lights were unbelievably beautiful!

That was the perfect way to spend our last night in Bergen. Watching the city lights surrounded by the incredible fjords and coast. We woke up the next day and basked in the culture before we caught a bus and train back to Oslo. That's where our great friends Christine and Charlie headed back home while we trained up the coast to the Lofoten Islands! Hopefully that story and those photos will be blogged soon, but till then just think 60 and over Artic cruise, snow storm in a tiny two door car and me almost losing a finger set against the most beautiful snowy wonderland you can imagine!

2017: Part 2 A Year in Review

2017: Part 2 A Year in Review | The Year of Patience

Cheers to 2018! I know I'm almost a week behind but that's just how I roll. This series of review is so therapeutic for me and a little tradition I love to do for my business. So even when I'm a little behind (or more like a lot behind) I still want to get these posts up and out into the world for myself and those who follow along. This coming year will be called the year of Patience. I've realized over the last couple months my strong desire for goals to just happen now. I never honestly saw myself as an impatient person until I realized how often I was searching for quick fixes and short cuts to my hopes and goals. So this year I've really set my heart on being patient and steady. I've struggled often with the anxiety and doubt that my goals will never be met and that's why I find the word patience to be so healing. I keep telling Chris that I just need to be happy with each victory rather than counting them up and not finding enough.

All of that said I have a lot of hope and resolve for this coming year in both my business life and personal life. And I always find writing out my hopes as a way to make them real, they are no longer passing thoughts but goals that I really do aim to achieve. So here it goes, a few goals I'm hoping for but staying patient about for 2018 they are for both my personal life and business.

First would definitely be my health. I've been struggling with that for quite some time and I'm ready this year to truly be authentic and transparent about this huge part of my life that I struggle with. Gone are the days when I can really forget about whats going into my body, I'm hoping to get focused and be patient with myself as I change the way I see food and wine. With that being said, my second goal would be to see myself with ALOT more grace. So often in the photography world I hear women crying out for self acceptance. Taking self portraits of their flaws and calling it beautiful. I honestly tried this past year to put myself in front of the camera once a week thinking it would be this path to healing. But it was mostly painful and scary and vulnerable. Being in the worst shape of my life and trying to capture the way I saw myself always felt like a disaster. But for 2018 I want to truly love more of my flaws in a way that gives me power rather than weakness and insecurity. Still working on the practicality of this hope but a huge drive for me is to one day have a daughter and to be a reflection of body loving confidence to her. I want her to see herself with love and grace so I know my heart has got to be soften toward myself to be a better example one day. (no I am not presently pregnant, this is more for down the line)

Thirdly I want to photograph what I'm passionate about. I want to capture people who truly get the work I'm trying to do. I also want to meet more people in general. Moving to Durham has been more of a surprising joy than I could have imagined. And my business has in no way felt like it was stalling even though I moved it during the biggest photography season of the year. But their are parts that I'm still trying to grow; Parts that took time in Kansas City and will take time in Durham. These goals are where I need to find patience. I want to shoot double the births in 2018 and half the Weddings. I want to shoot more sessions in people's homes, capturing the true love and joy found when people feel comfortable to be themselves. I want to document more intimate stories of motherhood, not just birth, but the emotional ups and downs of growing a child inside of you and then outside of you.

So there you go three big goals for my 2018 I'm even terrified to write them down. What if they don't come true, now everyone will laugh at me... and thats when I have to say to myself "patience"

The Veach Family

The truth is little ones under three are the best and hardest part about being a family photographer. Simply because they are constantly surprising the world around them. It keeps me on my toes and makes my job that much more fun and challenging. Long gone are the days where I can hold a stuffed animal over my head and little ones are distracted into a genuine smile (wait i'm not sure that ever worked now that I think about it)

So for me my goal is always to make my sessions about adventure, letting little ones see and experience the things they want to. As an adult I think we can agree sometimes getting your photo taken just feels awkward and I know kids get that sense too. So letting kids just be themselves has always been my trick for getting genuine moments of joy on little ones faces. Its not because I said "say cheese" its because I let them grab a stick or let them cling to mom if they are feeling unsure. Its definitely always full of surprises and maybe I'm letting a two year old run my session but somehow it always pans out.

It seriously was such a pleasure getting to go on an adventure with little Leo. He was excited to lead the way immediately and kept me and his sweet parents on our toes as he walked all over the beautiful Black Hoof Park. He was clever and kind and just loved smiling for the camera. I'm sure if I was 2 again he would have been my best friend!

The Slocum Family: Fall 2016

What to say about this wonderful family! They are obviously Kansas City through and through and its been such a blast getting to photograph them over this past year. Sara asked me a while back if I would come be outdoorsy with her and her family out on their family's property. Honestly I didn't realize what that entailed until a couple days before when she texted me to prepare my footwear for possible mud.  Well let me tell you there was a lot of mud and beautiful tall grass and a really bumpy pick up truck ride. It was worth it though to get to some of the most beautiful Kansas scenery. Thanks so much for taking me on this adventure, its exactly the type of sessions I love!
