The Birth of Ayara

A Powerful Uncensored Homebirth Story

Where to even begin with this story! It’s been almost a year since this little girl made her way into the world and still to this day it has been one of the births that has resonated the most with me. This beautiful mom worked so hard for this baby girl and her autonomy as a birthing woman was such an inspiration to me. She knew at her core the things she needed to safely bring her through the long hard labor and to bring her little girl earthside. She honestly didn’t need any of us because her intuition and strength is 100% what brought this little girl into the world, though I am honored to have been there to capture her story, to tell it now and to have documented the beautiful harmonious support of her husband and birth team.

I got the text from Carlita and Demarion the night before, that things were finally starting. This little girl had started her journey only a few days past their due date so I was not shocked to hear I could be called in soon. I ate some dinner and got into bed semi early to await the call to come. Around 4am I got the text that the midwife was on her way and would give me an update but I remember feeling super awake at the call and wanted to just get ready and head their way. So within 15 minutes I was in the car heading to her home.

When I arrived things were in the labor zone completely. The sun was still waiting to rise and the tones were quiet and excited. But hen I arrived we found out that Carlita was still in the early stages of labor. Usually when this happens I’ll do one of a few things, try and get some rest there on a couch, head home to return at another time or simply wait it out while giving mom plenty of space to progress at her own pace. I of course want to capture all the beauty of the labor phase but I also don’t want to slow things down by being in the space when things aren’t as “active.” So in the end I decided to go with the assistant midwife to grab a bite to eat down the road at Waffle house and come back in an hour to see how things were. When we returned I just felt that things were moving and didn’t want to miss a thing so I decided to stay.

By late afternoon mom was in full labor, active but this baby was definitely taking her time on the journey. Mom tried resting, being in water, dancing(swaying mostly), she ate and laughed with us and also took moments to be alone and talk to her baby. The beautiful thing was that her partner truly never left her side. He was such a rock all throughout her labor progression, helping her to laugh, relax but also feel supported and cherished in those deeply intense and emotional moments. He really was her “person” and it was beautiful to see. When the world could not reach her because of the intensity of each contraction it always still felt that her and Demarion were connected and in tune by a string or force.

As the sun went down there was an energy of being so ready for this baby to arrive all over the home. Mom was growing in her exhaustion but her heart was set on home birth. Baby was happy, healthy and content in her mom’s womb and was taking her time descending. Those last few hours were so emotional for us all but especially Carlita and Demarion. For all homebirths the option to transfer to a hospital is always there, even when it’s not “medically” needed sometimes the exhaustion can really be overwhleming. Some moms realize after hours that rest is the next part of the journey and choose to head in for a little pain releif and rest before pushing baby out. I had been there almost 22 hours and they had been laboring for over 30. So when the option to transfer was opened up I remember Carlita and Demarion really just needing a moment to be alone. I laid down on the couch next to the assistant midwife, waiting to hear what out next moves would be.

All in maybe 30 minutes/an hour we heard a call from the midwife down the stairs, “Angie, get my bag.” We both shot up. She rushed up the stairs with supplies and followed behind waiting to hear what was going on. The door to the bedroom was closed with obvious people right beyond it. It sounded as if mom was having baby right between the door and bed. There was no time for me to sqeeze in so I waited for the midwife to open it back up, seconds later I heard a baby cry and the midwife opened up the door to show mom sitting right there on the carpet holding her freshly born baby girl right beyond the door frame. It was amazing, a sight I think I’ll never get out of my brain! All Carlita needed was a deep dive into herself to seriously push that baby out. And she did it, when she went up to her room the hour before she pretty much locked herself away and during that time the shift of emotions turned into that final jolt of power every mom needs to take complete ownership of her body.

For the next hours I got to capture all of those raw and beautiful first moments of them as a family. They both spent the moments just adoring her little features and starting their beautiful bonding with breastfeeding. I really can’t believe this day was almost a year ago because when i look back through each image it transports me to the emotions of this day so vividly. That’s at it’s core the beauty of birth photography, having the ability to not only document a momentous change in your life but also to be able to relive the excitement for every day afterward. In those moments of doubt or exhaustion that come with parenthood, these images are a little source that never goes dry to remind you of your power and joy.

A sincere thank you to Carlita and Demarion for being open to sharing their empowered journey! It’s because of families like yours that more women in our culture will be given the tools to have a powerful birth story; not focused on pain but on strength and transcendence. Because when women see births and women like them giving birth and they come away feeling knowledgable and strong enough to take power over it for themselves.

And of course a thank you to Sankofa Birth and Women’s Care for your continued support for home births in our NC communities!

The Birth of Eve &

The Motherhood Journey of Chiara

An Empowered Homebirth at Windy Hill Farm

Birth does not fit into a box.

Birth is powerful in it’s unpredictability.

Birth can be long.

Birth is beautiful.

And Birth has a plan of it’s own sometimes even when we really wish it didn’t.

The Birth of Eve The Motherhood Journey of Chiara | Farm house homebirth | Hanna Hill Photography | Raleigh Durham Birth Photographer
The Birth of Eve and Motherhood Journey of Chiara | Farm house homebirth | Raleigh Durham Birth Photography and Videography

In the wee hours of the night I got the call that Chiara was in labor. Things were progressing gradually and her incredible doula/sister had a feeling baby would be there soon. When I arrived at the farm I was overcome by the beautiful setting. The sun still hadn’t risen but you could hear the early morning birds and feel the cold morning chill. When I entered the farm house I was hit with the incredible smell of homemade soap, wall of family photos and only the faint sounds of Chiara progressing beautifully through labor.

The room was in almost complete darkness as Russell and Chiara held one another and Johanna (sister/doula of Loving Hands Doula Care) constantly sat by their side. Along with the 4 of us we had present Chiara’s mom (also a practicing hospital midwife) and Deb Fiore and her team from Carrboro Midwiffery. Basically it was a house full of birth loving strong women, Russell who was literally one of the most supportive husbands around and curious cats! The birth sisterhood energy in the room though was palpable!

Soon after I arrived Chiara decided it was time to get into the pool. She worked gracefully and intensely for several hours as the sunlight spilled into the space. Contractions started to slow down though so she was encouraged to get up and move around a little. Chiara had talked about how much she wanted to labor outside and have photos outside. I was so excited when the weather was warm enough and perfect for her to take multiple strolls all over the property.

When baby was still not descending in the late afternoon it was time for rest, get off her feet and try and let her body relax for the hard pushing to come. She had been trying so many different positions and movements over the last 20 hours that her body needed to just restore. All of her support women and me just sat about quietly and shared stories on the porch swing and waited.

It felt like a very long day and I know Chiara was feeling discouraged and exhausted. She was doing absolutely everything she possibly could with strength and peace but that baby was just in the wrong position (though we didn’t fully know it at the time) There are some births that just weigh heavily on your heart. Chiara’s journey was definitely one of them. Because after more than 40 hours of labor (I was present for about 30) it was decided baby’s position was longer head down. Mom had to make the very hard decision to go to the hospital to get checked, knowing that most likely she would be sent for an emergency Caesarean upon arrival. After all this planning and hope for a beautiful farm homebirth I think everyone felt that loss for Chiara. Thankfully everyone was healthy and little Eve was born in the early hours of the next morning.

I was personally unable to be in the OR for this little one’s birth, it felt emotional for me that we had come this far and I was having to go home. But at the same time I knew Chiara and Russel needed to process this for themselves, surrounded by the support of their amazing doula and family.

I was able to revisit them together on the farm a few weeks later. I wanted to capture a moment for them reminiscent of their birth story. So we did a little recreation of the “baby being placed on your chest” moment. I got to meet baby Eve, see her little curls and celebrate this new life with her and her beautiful strong parents.

I will always keep a special place in my heart for this story, some of my favorite images I’ve ever taken are from this birth but mostly because that day is one I’ll never forget. There was something about the beauty in her power the sisterhood peacefulness and the shared emotion of waiting that keeps me coming back. I just love that in birth, I know I will always learn something from the experience. I’m constantly growing and receiving the knowledge of the women and mothers who have gone before us, who have poured out their wisdom so that we can know the beauty and power in the way they bring life into the world.

The Birth of Eve Film Story

After choosing a Caesarean and being taken to the hospital through ambulance. because of the emergent nature of the situation, I was unable to be in the OR and we decided that I would give Chiara and Russel time to process and heal.

They brought a healthy and happy baby girl named eve in the wee hours of the night.

I got to catch up with them a few weeks later at there cabin (also on the farm property) where the have been making a sweet home together.

Santiago : Birth Story

Santiago : A Family Centered Home Birth

Hanna Hill Photography | Raleigh Birth and Family Photographer

Santiago's birth was one of fierce strength and the epitome of what a family centered birth can really be like. Home birth is such a sacred and incredible way to bring your child into the world. There is just a sense of peace and comfort by being in your own space surrounded by the people you love and the atmosphere you've made home. It's hard to put into words really. Behind every birth there is a lot of fear, anticipation and worry about all the things that may or may not go wrong. It's why most women choose a hospital to bring their little one into the world. In so many ways that makes sense and I love those hospital birth just as much. But home births are in and of them selves accepting that birth is empowering and that you were actually built to handle a birth. That sense of strength and vitality always puts a completely different vibe into the air. A vibe of "you can do it" "you are strong" and "this is a true celebration."

The morning Santiago came into the world I woke to a text at around 5:00am. I was actually on call as backup for his arrival not the main photographer. In the world of birth photography having a back up is absolutely essential. As much as all of us want to be 24/7 available to out clients, life also happens and births are so unpredictable. I love that in the birthing community there really is a sense of friendship and community because just having someone else that you trust who's art is also beautiful and qualified brings you a sense of peace rather than competition.

So back to the story I woke up to a text from the main photographer Anna, of Anna Pollit.com, saying mom was in labor and that baby was coming today. Santiago's momma was on her 3rd baby so I knew that meant probably a swift labor but honestly had no idea how quick this little guy would arrive. I woke up showered and waited from a text from the mom to hear how far along things were coming. By the time I was done and dressed she had texted and was seriously ready for me to head that way. When I arrived I was met with the smell of home cooked soup, two sleepy brothers who had just woken up to all the commotion and a momma fiercely laboring.

She was a true warrior, one minute she was laughing and joking with her two year old son and the second she was peacefully yet intensely working through her contractions. The two big brothers were seriously making us all laugh, they were so incredibly excited to witness and meet their new little brother. The oldest just kept saying, "I'm so excited to meet him." and would run in every once and while to check if his little brother was on his way or not. The family focused vibe was so incredible and beautiful. This momma wanted those she loved to surround her and Santiago with as much relaxed and positive energy as possible.

I was seriously only there about 2 hours before this little boy was ready to come and see his family. This momma maybe pushed 3 times and he was out and crying, ready to meet his new family. The emotions in the room were uncontrollable, so many tears and laughs filled those first moments. Their oldest son just was over the moon that he now had another little brother to love on and their second son was so curious about how his life had just changed before his eyes.

I got to stay and watch this family of 4 become 5 and it was an incredible sight to see.I got to capture all of those incredible firsts that happen right after he comes into the world from his first feeding to getting his measurements done. It really was such an honor to be apart of this birth and seeing the incredible joy and celebration that comes along with telling birth stories.
